Legato Reader

Listen to the math, not the markup.

Screen readers spell out mathematics as markup: "backslash frac, a, b." Legato Reader reads it the way a lecturer would — "a over b" — and reads the whole article around it, start to finish, so you can listen to a paper on a walk.

How it works

Open an article with mathematics in Safari, on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Tap the Legato Reader extension, then Narrate this page.
It pulls out the prose and every equation — MathJax, MathML, KaTeX, raw LaTeX — works out how this particular document uses its notation, and writes a script meant to be heard rather than seen.
Press play. It runs from the lock screen, Control Center, and AirPods, and the page stays readable behind the player.

What makes it different

Notation is resolved in context. Whether a vertical bar is an absolute value or a modulus, whether a bracket is a commutator or an inner product — decided from how the document itself uses it, once, before a word is spoken.
Grouping is audible. "The square root of, the quantity x plus one, end quantity" — you can hear where the parentheses were.
The article is preserved. No summary, no added explanation, no skipped derivations. Every equation is spoken in full, in the author's own register.

Short pages count as a quarter of an article. Replaying something you have already narrated is free. Subscriptions are billed by Apple and cancel from Settings.

Honest limits

Version 1 handles Safari web pages containing mathematics, in the language they are written in. It does not do PDFs, translation, spoken tables, or figure descriptions yet, and automated narration can misread an equation — check the page before you rely on it. The support page spells all of this out.
