Setup, troubleshooting, and how to reach a human.
Email support@legatoreader.com — a person reads it, usually within two business days. Include your device, your iOS or macOS version, and the address of the page that gave you trouble; that is almost always enough to reproduce it.
Turning it on
iPhone and iPad
- Install Legato Reader and open it once.
- Settings → Apps → Safari → Extensions → Legato Reader, and switch it on.
- Set All Websites to Allow. Safari asks for this per site otherwise, and the extension cannot read the page until it is granted.
- Open a page with mathematics, tap ᴀA in the address bar, choose Legato Reader, then Narrate this page.
Mac
- Install Legato Reader and open it once.
- Safari → Settings → Extensions, tick Legato Reader.
- Click the toolbar icon → Narrate this page.
Frequently asked
- Nothing happens, or the button says the page can't be read.
Reload the page and try again — Safari cannot inject into a tab that was already open when you granted access. If it persists, check that site access is set to Allow, and that the address starts with
httporhttps. Safari does not let any extension run onabout:pages, PDF viewers, or the start page.- It says "No math found on this page."
The extension deliberately only handles pages containing real mathematics — MathJax, MathML, KaTeX, or LaTeX. A page that shows equations as images with no alternative text has nothing to extract. If you think a page should have worked, send us the link; broadening extraction is exactly what that inbox is for.
- Preparation takes a long time.
A full-length article is roughly one to two minutes of work: the script is written first, then the speech is synthesised in parts. The card shows which part it is on. A page somebody has already narrated comes back instantly and costs you nothing.
- What counts against my monthly allowance?
One full-length article counts as 1. A short page — under about five minutes of audio — counts as ¼. Replaying something you already narrated, and narrating a page already in the cache, are free. The allowance resets on the first of each month, UTC; the app shows how much is left and the exact reset date.
- How do I change or cancel my subscription?
Apple owns the subscription: Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions on iPhone, or App Store → your name → Account Settings on Mac. Cancelling keeps your access until the paid period ends, then drops you to the free allowance. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- I subscribed but the app still says Free.
Open the app and tap Restore purchases. If it still disagrees, sign out and back in. Entitlements are confirmed with Apple, so a device that has been offline can lag by a few minutes.
- Can I listen with the screen off, or from Control Center?
Yes. Playback registers with the system, so the lock screen, Control Center, AirPods controls, and CarPlay all drive it.
- Is my reading private?
The extension transmits nothing until you press Narrate; then that one page's text is sent to be turned into audio. We keep the audio and the script we produced, not the original text. Please do not narrate confidential documents — the reasoning is spelled out under the shared cache in our privacy policy.
- How do I delete my data?
In the app: Delete account. It is immediate and permanent, and removes your account, saved list, and usage history. You can also export a copy of everything first. Deleting the account does not cancel your Apple subscription — do that separately.
- Can it translate, or read PDFs?
Not yet. Version 1 narrates Safari web pages in their original language. PDF and EPUB, translation, spoken table narration, and figure description are the things we are asked for most, and are what we are working on next.
- It misread an equation.
Please send the page link and roughly where it went wrong. Mis-readings are how the narration rules get better, and they are the single most useful thing you can report.
What version 1 does not do
- PDF, EPUB, or anything outside a Safari web page.
- Translation — a page is read in the language it is written in.
- Reading table cells aloud, or describing figures and photographs.
- Adding explanation. It reads what the page says, faithfully, and nothing more.
- Working offline. Narration needs the network; audio already generated does not.
